Program helps disabled hunters get back into the woods

Calmon Peterson lost his eyesight to diabetes, but he has never lost his enthusiasm for hunting.

Thanks to Todd County landowners Barb and Curt Graves and Ron Welle of Midwest Outdoors Unlimited, Peterson had the chance to once again hunt wild turkeys.

Peterson and his wife Darla, also an avid hunter, make their home in Blomkest, near Willmar. Darla found out about the hunting opportunities for the disabled on the internet. Blind since 1990, Peterson received training in independent living from Blind, Inc. of Minneapolis.

With friends and family members, Peterson has gone on hunts, but his outing with Welle was the first time Peterson went on a special hunt for the handicapped where he was going to get to pull the trigger while hunting wild turkey.
